I followed Lan out of the room and I leapt over the banister in time to see Hayles leave. I sat on the bottom step and put my head in my hands.

Lan frowned and prowled out into the back garden, slamming his fist through a low wall that separated the patio from steps to the cellar. The brick and mortar splintered and exploded outwards.

I read the words. It was an address. I read through it over and over, trying to find something I knew. Trying to find out if I'd ever been there. I sifted through my human memories, the translucent veil covering them.

I looked up from the letter and at Lan, finding nothing in my memories. I didn't know why he was apologizing or what for. "It's not your fault."

He growled "Yes it is ... perhaps it's time I slept. I am beginning to tire ..." he said, hoping she would do the same as she had last time he had needed sleep and let him sleep with his arms around her so he knew she was safe ..
